Cartridge World of Connecticut

August, 2008 — Over 70% of toner and ink cartridges are thrown away. Replacement cartridges and toner are costing consumers hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. Cartridge World of Connecticut has a proactive solution to waste reduction that's a win/win for consumers, entrepreneurs and the environment. Every cartridge refilled means one less cartridge in our landfills.

Recycling cartridges is environmentally friendly and you can feel good about supporting sustainable development for the planet’s limited natural resources and not adding to our already overloaded landfills.

With Cartridge World of Connecticut and eastern New York’s continued commitment to recycle printer cartridges, we look forward to the day when recycling cartridges is as common as separating waste material in our homes for the recycle bins.

Did You Know

• It takes about a gallon of oil to make a new laser cartridge.
• Almost 8 cartridges are thrown away per second in the United States alone!
• In North America alone, over 350 million cartridges per year are discarded in our landfills, and that number increases by 12 percent annually!
• A laser cartridge thrown into landfill can take up to 450 years to decompose. Some components made of industrial grade plastics will take over a thousand years to decompose.
• Every remanufactured cartridge saves nearly 3 and 1/2 pounds of solid waste from being deposited in landfills.
• 70 percent of used printer cartridges throughout the world are currently being thrown out.
• In one year, if the world’s discarded cartridges were stacked end-to-end, they would circle the earth over three times.

We Make A Difference.

Now imagine the difference when individuals, then organizations, then cities, then states and then
nations start participating! That is Impact with Effect! At Cartridge World we are not only making a difference, we are changing the world!

It is important that the following message gets out to the 80% of printer users who dispose of their printer cartridges. You don't have to throw out your expensive printer cartridges.

Most printer cartridges can be remanufactured, refilled or reloaded.

• By bringing your used cartridges to Cartridge World, you can help protect our environment, and save 50% compared to the cost of a new cartridge!

• Cartridge World is dedicated to saving consumers, businesses, and the planet!

CNG/SCG Earth Day Week Program Gives Old Sneakers New Life

April 21, 2008 — The Connecticut Natural Gas (CNG) and Southern Connecticut Gas Company (SCG) Employee Volunteer councils are sponsoring the third annual recycling program for sneakers. In partnership with The Connecticut Recyclers Coalition (CRC) and Nike's Reuse-A-Shoe program, the councils will be collecting the sneakers from employees, vendors, and other businesses at its East Hartford and Orange locations.

“This is an environmental project designed to keep discarded sneakers out of landfills and to reuse them for sports surfaces,” said Lissette Andino, coordinator of CNG’s Volunteer Council. “Our employees and vendors have embraced this effort over the past two years and we are now expanding it by being a collection site for other businesses.”

The sneakers will be ground into pebble-size pieces and separated: rubber from the soles will resurface soccer, football and baseball fields and weight room flooring; foam will be used for synthetic basketball and tennis courts and playground surface tiles; and granulated fabric will become padding under hardwood basketball courts.

Any brand or style of athletic shoe is welcome, but the group cannot accept shoes with metal cleats, sandals, dress shoes, or boots. They can be dropped off at the two companies during the week of April 21-25 between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:00 pm.

Locations include:
In the main lobby of CNG’s operations center at 76 Meadow Street, East Hartford
The security center at SCG’s operations center at 60 Marsh Hill Road, Orange

CNG and SCG are a subsidiaries of the Energy East Corporation, a super regional energy services and delivery company in the Northeast. Nike's Reuse-A-Shoe program is an integral part of NikeGO, Nike’s long-term commitment to promote healthier lifestyles for kids through physical activity. Since the Reuse-A-Shoe program began in 1993, Nike has helped donate more than 170 sport surfaces, called NikeGO Places.

BioHeat in Connecticut

ICPANovember 11, 2007— If you'd like to know about the latest in Oilheat technology and its availability in Connecticut, the Independent Connecticut Petroleum Council has developed a Web site that reviews everything you need to know about America's newest alternative fuel - BioHeat. This clean, Renewable energy with Domestic content will dramatically reduce reliance on foreign energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce your home or business's carbon footprint.

Innovations from a number of equipment manufacturers - things like side-wall venting, indirect water heating, and higher efficiency standards have made BioHeat a cost saving alternative. Newer furnaces and boilers are smaller, quieter, and they work wonderfully with other new home heating technologies like programmable thermostats and radiant flooring. Today’s high technology energy solutions reach efficiencies of 90% or higher and dramatically reduce consumption, emissions and save energy dollars.

Through advancing technology, consumer education, equipment maintenance, financing and tax credit programs, and now with BioHeat, the new alternative fuel from renewable, domestically grown agricultural products - we continue to lead the way in reducing emissions, lowering Connecticut's carbon footprint, and ultimately putting a little more green in your pocket. How's that for intelligent warmth!
